The Fiber Optic Association has developed curriculum guidelines for training course approval and only approves schools or training organizations meeting our standards. Schools or training organizations which offer training which meets FOA standards are listed on this website and are authorized to offer FOA certifications.

We offer onsite training, customized to the client's needs. Since 1989, Wayne Gipson, your instructor, has been working with all facets of fiber optic technology, both LAN and OSP environments.

Classes Offered: Fiber Optic Technology (CFOT class) (LAN or IT Technician Option)

Topics covered in this class:

  1. Safety with fiber optics in testing, construction, and splicing, cleaning of connectors

  2. Cable considerations for inside LAN cable (fire safety ratings), how to specify the right cable, specialty cables, planning cable routes, types of fiber, deciding on the right fiber.

  3. Cable preparation hands-on labs for outside and indoor fiber, closure prep, buffer tube prep, breakout kits for terminating fiber cables, slitting buffer tubes for midspan access

    1. Techniques for installing cables and cable preparation into LAN cabinets
  4. Cable termination techniques, connector types with labs on epoxy connectors, pigtail connectors, and quick term connectors

  5. Hands-on labs on mechanical and fusion splicing

  6. Testing in the field-practical troubleshooting tips, demonstration of test gear, and labs with Power meters, Visual fault locators, OTDRs, finding and identifying problems with the optical fiber, testing with a minimum of equipment. Standards testing that helps with future equipment upgrades

  7. Documentation of the fiber installation

  8. Tips on buying tools and identifying useful gear that will help make the tech more productive. All tips are non-vendor specific, looking at the best solutions, instead of making a sale. This part of the seminar can save the student from buying expensive tools and gear with unneeded features, the savings more than offsetting the cost of the class. Also discussion on buying items from on-line auctions (Ebay, etc.)

All attendees have the opportunity to take the FOA Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) Exam. The exam is based on the information presented in this class. Upon successful completion of the examination and the lab exercises, the tech will receive a certificate of completion from Gipson Fiber Optics, and a certificate from the Fiber Optic Association for the CFOT, and will be mailed a card with a certification number and one years membership in the FOA from the Fiber Optics Association, all included in the price of the class.

Fiber Optic Technology for Telephone Technicians (CFOT & CFOS/O class) 5 Day class

Topics covered in this class:

  1. Safety with fiber optics in testing, construction, and splicing

    1. Cable types, color codes for cables and fibers, ribbon fiber, loose tube fiber, connector types
  2. Cable preparation hands-on labs for outside plant, indoor fiber, closure prep, buffer tube prep, breakout kits for terminating fiber cables, slitting buffer tubes for midspan access

  3. Techniques for closure prep, NID prep, CO splicing techniques, terminating cables into LAN cabinets

  4. Cable termination techniques, with labs on epoxy connectors, pigtail connectors, and quick term connectors

  5. Mechanical and fusion splicing labs and splice tray preparation and organization

  6. Testing in the field-practical troubleshooting tips, demonstration of test gear, and labs with Power meters, Visual fault locators, correctly setting up OTDRs finding and identifying problems with the optical fiber

  7. OTDR expanded labs with troubleshooting case histories, locating a fiber break accurately, using an OTDR with splitters in the network,

  8. Troubleshooting problems at the NID, in a pedestal, in a handhole, midspan, and at the CO

  9. FTTH troubleshooting, splitters and how to test them,

  10. CD/PMD/SA, and reflectance issues in the long distance fiber optic plant

  11. Tips on purchasing generators, splicing trailers, tents, tables, and other items needed to effectively work in the field.

  12. Tips on buying tools and identifying useful gear that will help make the tech more productive.

Upon successful completion of the examination and the lab exercises, the tech will receive a certificate of completion from Gipson Fiber Optics, and certificates from the Fiber Optic Association for the CFOT and the CFOS/O, and will be mailed a card with a certification number and one years membership in the FOA from the Fiber Optics Association, all included in the price of the class.

Testing Fiber Optics 2 day class. If taken with CFOT class, or if the student has the CFOT certification, the CFOS/T specialist certification can be earned in this class.

AFL ribbon splicer FITEL fiber identifiers and other specialty gear are used in labs where appropriate.
