The Fiber Optic Association has developed curriculum guidelines for training course approval and only approves schools or training organizations meeting our standards. Schools or training organizations which offer training which meets FOA standards are listed on this website and are authorized to offer FOA certifications.

As networking needs of business and home users increase, changes and updates to the structured cabling environment have become essential. The skills to install and manage cabling are becoming essential for the IT professional. This course is created for students who wish to gain a basic skill in the installation, management, and troubleshooting of copper and fiber optic cabling.

Objectives: At the end of this course students will be able to:

  1. Understand the history of telecommunications and technology in communications.
  2. Construct and install network cabling according to TIA/EIA 568 standards.
  3. Construct and install video cabling.
  4. Manage and test network installations including copper, wireless, infrared, powerline.
  5. Understand standards for fiber optic cabling
  6. Terminate and test fiber optic cabling.
  7. Follow best practices for fiber optic cabling installations.
  8. Understand how cabling is applied in business practices.

Grading:

End of chapter exercises 10% Lab Exercises 10% Quizzes 10% Copper Test 15% Fiber Optic Test 15% Final Written Exam 20% Practical Exam 20%
